LEARNING HISTORY FROM MARIONETTE THEATER
Miss Fay’s Historical Marionette Theater is for children of all ages, thanks to the legacy of long ago Chandler teacher Fay Armstrong. Famous for creating little puppets with strings, she used them to entertain and teach manners and morals to her students.
You can see her little characters from the 1930’s and ‘40’s at the museum and also beautiful new ones created by artists in likenesses of Oklahoma historical characters. They are displayed daily, along with movies about all this by Joann McMillan, well-known professional puppeteer, actress and playwright.
Hand puppets and simple stringed ones are also there for you to use and perform your own skit or play on a small stage. Every fall, McMillan assumes the role of teacher Miss Fay Armstrong and performs an Oklahoma history play for all about history for all 3rd and 4th grade county students who come to the museum. The public is also invited to attend by calling for reservations.
The fall 2008 play is “Keeping the Peace: Life and Times of Marshal Bill Tilghman.” Tilghman lived in Chandler, was sheriff, state senator and the most famous of all U.S. Marshals.
Schedules are listed to the right. Performances can be booked for groups at other sites in central and eastern Oklahoma by calling McMillan at (918) 707-3000 or email joannmcmillan@hotmail.com.
